What is a hurricane shutter?
alt
Hurricane or "storm" shutters are designed to limit damage to windows and doors from high velocity winds and flying debris and other objects. They are very common in coastal areas, and are increasingly becoming more common in other areas as a means of protection from hurricane conditions, tornadoes, or high winds.

alt
Why do I need hurricane shutter protection?
alt
1. Reduced insurance costs: In Florida, most insurers will provide substantial premium reductions for their customers who install hurricane protection. 2. Codes & Legislation: In order to minimize damage to homes and businesses, a few years ago legislation and codes were passed, requiring new homes and homes which are being remodeled to upgrade their window and door hurricane protection systems. By checlink with your local municipality, you can determine what their requirements are. 3. Family & Treasures: Protecting our family, our treasures, our home and our business are clearly priorities for all of us.

alt
Do storm and hurricane shutter protection products really provide much protection?
alt
The state of Florida and a number of counties have passed legislation mandating hurricane protection products, because the research and experience clearly indicates substantial protection benefits from hurricane protection products. Now, standard building codes require a product to withstand a minimum of 110 MPH winds. In addition, newer standards have been adopted (commonly called ASCE-7-88). These standards increase the level or wind load durability, and add additional tests for positive and negative wind pressures, positive and negative wind cycling, and and impact test.

alt
Do I really only need to protect the side of my home or business which faces the water?
alt
If the storm breaches any windows or doors on your home, the "envelope" is broken. When the envelope breaks, the pressure changes inside the structure. When the pressure changes, it is such an extreme action that the home or building is exposed to a total loss. The internal pressure change, combined with suction of high winds from the storm passing over head, typically results in total destruction of the structure and loss of its contents. So, we protect all openings, not just those which face the water.

alt
What are rolling hurricane protection shutters made from?
alt
Aluminum is the primary material that rolling shutters are made from. The aluminum shutter products come in different strengths, designs and alloys. The important thing to keep in mind is that the decision about what the best product is for the particular project will depend on the size of the opening to be protected. While some companies offer lower grade products with extruded vinyl foam-filled slats in their products, those products do not meet the ASCE-7-88 code requirements for roll-up storm shutters. On the other hand, the extruded aluminum double-wall slat and heavy wall aluminum roll formed resin filled slat is the proper way to satisfy these requirements with a rolling shutter.
